Submagic is the tool most short-form creators mention when they want those bold, word-by-word "Hormozi-style" captions without editing them by hand. It is also one of the tools whose pricing has changed the most — the old free plan is gone, and a lot of review sites still describe it. Here is what the official pricing page actually shows, what each plan is good for, and when you should not pay at all.

How Submagic credits work
All Submagic plans run on a monthly credit balance. According to Submagic's help centre, credits are spent when you upload a video and when you use AI features, and everything comes out of one pool. The pricing page converts credits into "videos" at 3 credits per video (45 credits = 15 videos), which is a good estimate for a normal short with captions.
That gives you a simple cost per video at monthly prices:
| Plan | Monthly price | Videos | ≈ cost per video |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $19 | 15 | $1.27 |
| Pro | $39 | 40 | $0.98 |
| Business | $69 | 100 | $0.69 |
If you post one short a day, Starter's 15 videos will run out half-way through the month. That is the most common reason people end up on Pro.
The Submagic free trial: what you can (and can't) do
Submagic's pricing page says "No credit card required", and its help centre describes the trial like this: you can upload 3 short videos and edit them the way you want; downloading without the watermark requires a subscription. Submagic also runs a "first video free" offer for its social scheduler, where you can publish one video to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube for free — also with a watermark.
In practice, the trial is for testing the caption engine on your own footage, not for producing content you publish. That is fair, but it is worth knowing before you plan a week of posts around it.
Which plan should you pick?
Starter ($19/mo): occasional posters and talking-head clips under 2 minutes
If you post 2–3 shorts a week and mainly want clean animated captions without a watermark, Starter covers it. The 2-minute cap is the main limit: you cannot upload a 10-minute podcast and cut it here. For that, a clipping tool like quso.ai is the better fit.
Pro ($39/mo): daily posters and anyone who wants the "auto edit" features
Pro is where Submagic becomes more than a caption tool: auto zooms, removing silences and bad takes, cleaning audio, and stock b-roll. These features are what save the real time on talking-head content. 40 videos a month fits a daily posting schedule with some spare.
Business ($69/mo): teams and agencies
Business is for teams that need 4K/60 fps, long uploads (30 minutes), custom templates and brand assets. A solo creator rarely needs it.
Monthly or yearly billing?
Yearly billing looks much cheaper per month ($12 instead of $19 on Starter), but you pay for the full year up front. My advice is simple: start monthly. Use one or two months to see whether you really post as often as you plan to and whether the captions suit your style. Only switch to yearly once Submagic has become a fixed part of your weekly routine. Many creators buy a yearly plan in a burst of motivation and then post far less than expected — a monthly plan you can cancel is the safer choice while you're still finding your rhythm.
Also check whether the plan is priced "per member". If you invite an editor or a teammate to your workspace, the price goes up per person, so a small team should compare that against having one person do all the uploads.
Do you need Submagic at all? Honest comparison with free options
Here is the honest part. If budget is tight, CapCut's free auto-captions can get you most of the way. Creators on Reddit regularly make the same point: CapCut gives you captions and animated text for free, but you will fiddle more to get a polished look. Submagic's value is speed: upload, wait a couple of minutes, download a finished, styled short.
| Submagic | CapCut (free) | |
|---|---|---|
| Animated word-by-word captions | One click, many trending templates | Available, more manual styling |
| Auto b-roll | Yes (stock library depends on plan) | Manual |
| Remove silences / bad takes | Pro and above | Manual or limited |
| Time per short | Minutes | Longer, depends on skill |
| Cost | From $19/mo (monthly) | Free tier |
A simple rule: if your time is worth more than about $1 per video, Submagic pays for itself. If you are just starting and posting a few times a week, learn CapCut first and come back later.
Pros and cons
What's good
- Fast, polished caption styles built specifically for short-form.
- Auto b-roll, zooms and silence removal on Pro save real editing time.
- No watermark on any paid plan, including Starter.
- Clear credit system: about 3 credits per video.
What to watch out for
- No permanent free plan any more; the trial is watermarked and limited to 3 short videos.
- Video length caps (2 min on Starter) make it a finishing tool, not a long-video clipper.
- Caption styles are less customisable than editing manually in a full editor.
- Auto b-roll can be generic; review it before publishing.
A workflow that combines tools sensibly
- Long video or podcast? Cut the best moments first with a clipping tool (quso.ai or similar).
- Finish each short in Submagic for captions, zooms and b-roll.
- Need a voiceover? Generate it in ElevenLabs first — read the ElevenLabs free plan rules before using it commercially.
- Posting to Chinese and English audiences? Add a second subtitle line using the bilingual subtitles workflow.
